Being a leader is about what you do
Being a leader all starts with you and your view on being a leader. Can you believe and develop the belief that you are a leader in everything you do today? Take a few moments to capture in your journal the answers to the questions below. The purpose of this exercise is to provide you with awareness on how you perceive leadership, if you feel you are being a leader today or not and to give insight to what could be preventing you from being a leader today. With awareness you can make different choices and this will lead to different results.
• What does leadership mean to you?
• What does being a leader mean to you?
• Where are you being a leader today in your life?
• Where are you not being a leader today?
• What is the reason you feel you are not being a leader in this area above?
• If you are not being a leader today in your life, where could you be a leader?
• What would it take for you to feel you are a leader?
• What is preventing you today from being a leader?
• What else is preventing you from being a leader today?
From completing the above awareness exercise, you will now have an understanding of your current belief on being a leader. Belief is the critical shift to get you on your way to being a leader. To build on reinforcing your view that you are already a leader or to start the process of taking on this persona of being a leader, start by assuming you are a leader today and act as a leader. I’m not talking about faking it until you make it. If that works for you then feel free to do it. I’m getting you to focus on claiming your role and position as being an example in everything you do and get you to begin behaving as a leader. Your focus here is to start looking at how you can be the best and do the best you can at what you are doing. This change in your focus will drive your energy into this space, expand your awareness and get you to start asking yourself questions that empower you to act more as a leader. These will be questions such as: How do I need to feel to be a leader in what I’m doing? What does a leader doing this do to set a great example? How do I need to be to be a leader at what I do? What do I need to know? What do I need to do? These questions are the framework of the Be, Know, Do model that you will use as one of your guiding principles to being a leader.
